| Since getting back from my first-ever visit to
Tuscon, AZ, I've been keeping a special eye on Tuscon-based weblog Breaching the Web,
especially as blogger Kristie Taylor has been following a story I heard in the radio news quite a bit while I was there
over the weekend. Tuscon's city council, noting that Boy Scouts now discriminate against gays, voted to withhold $29,000 that was passed along from the city to the scouts through United Way. According Taylor's site, the city is now considering withholding the $1.5 million it gives United Way if United Way keeps the scouts on its roster. Thanks to Kristie for keeping us up to date on that interesting story and providing some links. |

I'm in Tuscon
for a couple of days, where it is more desert-like that I had guessed that it would be. There aren't many lawns as the rest of us think of lawns. There are some nice rock and cactus gardens. I took a walk around the University of Arizona campus, and where the once and future cental mall of the campus might have otherwise provided a pleasant walk, I found the construction site of what will be known as the Integrated Learning Center. This collection of classrooms, office space and other facilities will tie in several buidings below ground and return the mall, at least sort of, to its earlier state. I'll be curious some day to come back and see this completed. |

| I will be 49 next week, and have
been thinking about the fact in my college and high school years, I studied events of the past that had
happened 25, 30, 40 years ago: the Depression, Pearl Harbor, World War II. Now I can remember events of the past 25, 30, 40 years ago. Men into space. JFK (his assassination was the galvanizing moment of history for my generation in the way Pearl Harbor was for my parents'). Vietnam, and the war protest. The "revolution" of the sixties. Nixon and Watergate. And it is against this backdrop that I ponder things nearer to today: the Gulf War. The dissipaton of Y2K anxieties into a cascading series of wonderful celebrations. But what bothers me is this: What happened in the 1980s? |
