Yesterday I gave David Sibley's National Audobon
Society Guide to Birds to Susan as one of those no-occasion gifts. This is a wonderful book, with an
extraordinary wealth of drawings. Susan particularly likes the fact that there are a number of different views drawn of
each kind of bird, in flight, from various angles, etc., which should greatly help in identifications. Me, I like to
look at the pretty pictures. |

This morning when I put the empty cat food jug dutifully into my recycling bin, I wondered as I often do if all
this recycling, which is no doubt beneficial, doesn't subtly disserve the environment by creating the delusion that we
are acting responsibly.
What if there could be some value ascribe to the efficacy of different behaviors... if diverting a portion of our
horrendous waste stream into re-use actually was worth a point, would carpooling, as little as once a week or even once
a month, be worth 50? Would buying a small sedan instead of a big SUV count, over the course of three or four years,
for several thousand points? And conversely, would having the SUV for a month wipe out the value of years of recycling?
My fear is that fastidiousness at the recycle bin gives us a feeling of superior satisfaction that then allows us
to blithely commit atrocities.
Of course, this may all be a fantasy on my part to address some submerged, covetous envy of SUV owners. So, I'll try to expiate my
sins today by making sure the newspaper isn't thrown out with the regular garbage. |
