We are fortunate that in Iberia Parish, where we live, there are a few thousand Lao as the result
of refugee settlement and then their becoming a permanent part of our community. About six or seven miles from our house,
to the northwest of New Iberia, is a Lao village with a Buddhist temple. Each year a Lao New Year celebration is held there that draws
visitors from several surrounding states. Last night, Susan noticed a monk at the drugstore near the bus station, and learned from his
few words of English that he was trying to make his way to the village. We gave him a ride and had a nice visit at the village and the temple,
and it reminded us to go to the celebration and parade today. I offer several images in a photo page that is about a 1 MB load, and also
an AVI movie
that is, be well and duly warned, about 8 MB. |

Yesterday and today, we went with our friends Patrick and Elizabeth for a weekend of hiking and
bed and breakfast, crossing the Mississippi line just above St. Francisville, LA to hike for the day at the Clarks Creek Recreation Area.
Then it was back into Louisiana for a night at Cottage Plantation, and a wonderful meal at the Ox-Bow restaurant at the Myrtles. All in all a good getaway
during a time when we've all been working too hard! |
