Two moths
On a plant in our yard. Hemileuca-maia, whose caterpillars have given me many a sting. In the 70s I taught at a school set amongst huge old oaks and the kids in the school yard were beset with stings in the springtime. (Thanks to Frank Graffagnino for the link to the identification.)

Frost flowers
Verbesina virginica, sometimes called frostweed, is one of a few plants that makes these unusual "frost flowers" or "ice flowers" on cold winter mornings. Freezing water splits the stems and unfrozen water from below continues to be drawn up and extruded through the split to freeze instantly in the winter air, building these delicate, beautiful and ephemeral structures. These were found near Delacroix, LA.
